Aspiring Vet? How to Choose your Third A-Level Wisely

Published on 19 May 2026 at 22:58

Firstly, what even are A levels? A levels are defined by UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service)as ‘ subject-based academic qualifications taken by students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, typically aged 16 to 18, after completing their GCSEs. They are the primary qualification used for university admissions’.

Now for Veterinary Medicine your first two A-levels are already decided: Biology and Chemistry. These are non-negotiables with most Universities but the choice of your third A-Level is in your own hands. However you should note these A-Levels: Citizenship studies, critical thinking, general studies and global perspectives- are not accepted as a third A Level.

So how do you choose the right third A-Level for you?

'What do you enjoy?'

Your third A-Level can be focused on an area you actually enjoy ,you don't have to feel pressured to choose Mathematics or Physics to appear more scientifically well rounded, so if you have absolutely no passion for these subjects then look at other subjects like Languages or History. So much commitment is require for each individual A-Level so choosing one you already have a passion for will make studying so much easier -especially when you are in the clutches of the devil himself: procrastination.

'Play to your strengths'

Veterinary Medicine has high requirements so when choosing your third A-Level look at subjects you excel at -in my own case I chose History a subject I loved as I had no passion for subjects such as Mathematics or Physics especially during studying. This is a crucial thing to keep in mind as by playing to your strengths you ensure a set of strong A-Level grades that keep your University Options wide open.

With all that said, while your third A level is a major choice in your journey- it doesn't have to be overwhelming. If you understand your strengths; your interests then you’re already on the right path towards choosing the right one for you and hopefully this post will have cleared up the fog of confusion you may have been feeling . Remember A levels isn’t the one door you will open for life, it’s just the first doorway in your veterinary journey - so research your options and trust yourself to make the right choice for you.
